Data center floor planning using DCIM

One of the trends in today´s world in data center is the use of information technology to monitoring, gathering and processing useful information in real time in a way managers and operational staff be capable to make decisions about the use of facilities regarding to space and energy. In this scenarios is where DCIM (Data center infrastructure management) brings the solution. One of the benefits of DCIM is the capability to monitor the computer room through a graphic representation in the same way room is built and equipment deployed.

The floor of the data center is fundamentally an X-Y coordinated grid used to represent the actual location of equipment within the computer room. Floor planning is a critical reference process, therefore, floor space must be constantly updated in order to mimic the characteristics of computer room. Precise positioning for every device and rack is an important requirement to achieve the maximum benefit of DCIM.

One of the functionalities of DCIM is that it can be represented the number of available rack ...

Air Segregation Systems

Segregation of air leads to good air management. Although a containment system can be installed, the reality is different and two fundamental problems arise: first, even with a perfect containment system, the amount of air supplied needs to be controlled to meet the requirements of the IT equipment; second, containment is only part of the solution, since good segregation is required.

Once the segregation system is in place, an additional study and a way of describing the efficiency of air separation is required.

Availability of flow Af (ratio of air volume of the cooling units to the volume of air required by the IT equipment).

Air Segregation Efficiency, Air Segregation Efficiency (ASE). The ideal case of a 100% ASE is achieved when there is zero bypass and zero recirculation i.e. the containment systems by themselves reduce or even eliminate bypass flow and recirculation is false.

Note the bypass grate in the hot aisle and pass wires. If the cold aisle does not receive sufficient air flow there will be ...
